English driver Joe Dainer of Petersham is having his ninth attempt this year to win the Archibald prize, by exhibiting a portrait of last year's winner, William Dobell.Mr. Dainer, 51, stocky bald and sincere has been painting nearly all his life as a hobby. He has never had a lesson in portrait or life work, but claims two years tuition in landscape and seascape.He led us to what he called his humble studio, which is a small room in his crowded flat. In the room are a double and single bed, a large wardrobe, large loughboy (the doors of which he uses for an easel) and a couple of chairs and a table. February 15, 1950.

Canadian Emblem For London Coronation Decorations -- Students at work on the huge Canadian emblem at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, to-day (Tuesday). On left other students are working on one of the huge crowns for the Commonwealth Stand. Large-scale emblems of the eight self-governing countries of the Commonwealth will form part of London's Coronation decorations.
