Made from carved alabaster, the formal elements of this object, such as its seven-sided base and elongated prismatic shape, suggests that it functioned as a pawn. The traces of black lines and blue pigment on the alabaster stone serve as evidence that it was originally painted. It is one of many objects acquired by the Museum through a division of finds with the Iranian government.. Chess Piece, Pawn 450096Caldwell, Lake George Plate; Manufactured by William Ridgway (& Co.) As was common at the time, this hat follows the lines of women's headwear styles. Day bonnets were often ornamented with various types of materials to add texture and interest, as seen here with the braid arranged in an undulating pattern and the silk gathered into a ribbon on the side. These types of decorations provided variety from the plainer dress of the period.. Hat 156347Close up blue matchstick on blue backgroundGlass Fragments 4th-7th century Coptic. Owned by renowned art collector and fashion enthusiast Muriel Kallis Newman, the collection represents her knowledge and appreciation of a wide range of jewelry design and making traditions. Numerous items in her collection are composite artifacts made from various cultures and time periods reappropriated as modern jewelry creations by or for Muriel. It is important to note that Newman wore many of the pieces in the collection, interpreting them to suit and express her own singular, often avant-garde style..
