Valentine ca. 1880 Anonymous This is an unsigned, folded, cameo-embossed, open-work lace paper card.The recto has a design of leafy swirls and a central oval area with an embossed geometric frame and flowers. Applied to this center oval is a chromolithographed, die-cut scrap of a beautiful pink rose with a blue ribbon. Inside, is inserted a piece of paper with a scalloped border, and brightly chromolithographed in a colorful gothic pattern of red, yellow, blue and purple. Claribel. Unknown, photographer about 1860-1869 This page sits in an album that intermixes pages of unaltered cartes-de-visite with photocollages. Typically made by Victorian upper-class women, the photocollaged pages could include added elements as simple as a watercolor flourish in the middle of the page or a frame drawn around a mounted photograph. The photocollages however, could also be elaborate, full-paged compositions made with a variety of drawing materials and integrating photographs, found printed materials, and/or colored paper. _The Westmorland Album_ includes examples of all these options. Many of the cartes-de-visites were inserted in specially manufactured album pages that came with slots. Many of those pages have watercolored floral designs at the center. Another page shows a bird (obtained from a printed source) carrying a photograph in its beak. On this page, the photocollagist has drawn a frame around the mounted photograph. Carolyn Peter, J.
