Art grounds: View from the Gladiator Borghese. The three gentlemen, whose young man who ceases the drawing maybe represents Joseph Wright or Derby himself, comparing candlelight a strong reduced copy of the so-called Gladiator Borghese with a drawing of the image. The original was excavated in 1611 in Rome and acquired by Cardinal Scipione Borghese. It belonged to the most famous antique images of Rome and countless copies have been made. Wright of Derby, who made the painting around 1764, must have known such a copy in his area. He undertook his "Grand Tour" in 1773 and could only admire the image in real life.
