The legend of the long wanderings and many exploits of the Russian hero Yeruslan - the son of the hero Lazar, who defeated the snake-devourer of people and beat off the beautiful girl who became Lazarus's wife, Eruslan - the mother. Since childhood Eruslan has been endowed with enormous power, he could not cope with it himself, that's why he left his parents' house, picking up the hero's horse on the way-he searched for exploits. And he found a lot: he defeated the horde of Prince Daniel Bely, who besieged his native city, freed his father and mother from prison; took possession of the sword that the living head of the deceased Roslan Bogatyr kept.

The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

The early 1900s caption reads: "Sigurd said to himself that whatever befell he must look upon the face beneath the helmet was Brynhild." According to legend, Sigurd found and wakened Brynhild, a maiden who lay in an enchanted sleep upon a high mountain. They loved one another, and Sigurd gave her a ring from the dragon's treasure, promising to return and marry her.

Four Seasons: Spring: Fishing Scene, designed c. 1535, woven mid- to late 1600s. Possibly by Gobelins Manufactory (France, Paris, est. 1662). Wool, silk, and gold filé: tapestry weave; overall: 255 x 266 cm (100 3/8 x 104 3/4 in.). In this springtime scene, two fishermen wade in a river, dragging a net suspended between two poles. A noble couple on a bridge gestures toward other fishermen, who occupy the other side of this scene in other extant examples of this tapestry with a larger picture plane. In the background, townspeople walk on bridges that lead to the gateway of a town with brick walls and portals. In the far distance, farmers till the soil to sow new seeds, another typical activity associated with spring. The trees on the hills are just beginning to sprout new buds.

The Batavians Surround the Romans at Vetera. In 1613, the Dutch parliament (States General) commissioned Otto van Veen to paint twelve paintings depicting the revolt of the Batavians against the Romans in AD 69 and 70. These were displayed in Binnenhof, the central government building in The Hague. In the early years of the Dutch Republic, many compared their own revolt against Spain to the Batavian uprising.

Epaminondas Saves the life of Pelopidas. These two friends are celebrated for their devotion to each other. Epaminondas was a poor boy, who rose to be the leader of Thebes, and made it, by his genius, the foremost state in Greece. The young nobleman, Pelopiodas, was his friend from youth and became his ablest general. It was before either had become famous that Epaminondas stood over his wounded friend in battle, and single-hand held back a whole troop of enemy until help could reach them.
