US Civil War. Battle of Missionary Ridge, Nov. 25, 1863. Gen. George Thomas' 23,000 soldiers were ordered to attack Confederate trenches at the base of the 2 mile long Missionary Ridge. Once having done so, to escape Rebel fire from above, they sought shelter in the steep sides of the ridge. Without orders, they then scaled to its top and broke the Confederate line by sundown, resulting in Rebel retreat of thirty miles toward Atlanta, Georgia (BSLOC_2018_9_60)

American Revolution. Capture of John Andrew Andre, Sept. 23, 1780. Andre mistook his Patriot captors as Tories because one wore a Hessian soldier's overcoat. After behaving suspiciously, Andre offered them a bribe, if they would let him go, which they refused. André's captors were John Paulding, David Williams, and Isaac Van Wart. The United States Congress gave each of them a pension of $200 a year, and they were honored with a medal, the Fidelity Medallion (BSLOC_2019_3_165)

Agustina Zaragoza Doménech (1786-1857). Heroine of the Peninsular War (1808-1814), during the first siege of Saragossa. Known as Agustina of Aragon. She fought against the French troops in the defence of the bastion of Portillo, in Saragossa. Agustina de Aragón contributed to the defence by encouraging the artillerymen and bringing them ammunition and food. The corporal in command of the Portillo artillery battery was wounded, as were the rest of the soldiers at the position. As the battery was exposed to be captured by the French, Agustina fired using one of the cannons. Some wounded artillerymen were able to help her while reinforcements arrived, keeping the position and forcing the enemy to retreat. 2 July 1808. Chromolithography, detail. General Daendels Taking Leave of Lieutenant-Colonel Krayenhoff. The French army, which had invaded the Netherlands at the request of the Dutch Patriots, had already reached Utrecht when Daendels, a Dutch general in French service, sent Krayenhoff to Amsterdam. He was to ask the city council to step aside so that a new -Patriot -government could be installed before the French arrived. The change of authority took place in Amsterdam that same evening, 18 January 1795.

View of the Interior of One of the Tanks on Board the Great Eastern 1865-66 Robert Charles Dudley British One of the 19th century's great technological achievements was to lay a telegraphic cable beneath the Atlantic, allowing messages to speed back and forth between North America and Europe in minutes, rather than ten to twelve days by steamer. An initially successful 1858 attempt, led by Cyrus W. Field and financed by the Atlantic Telegraph Company, failed after three weeks. Two working cables were finally laid in July and September 1866, the result of repeated efforts by the indefatigable Field, a cadre of engineers, technicians, and sailors, two groups of financial backers, and significant help from the British and United States navies. Dudley documented the process in a series of watercolors and oils, this example showing the interior of one of the three great tanks containing coiled cable in the hold of the Great Eastern.
