The Tonkin Campaign (French: Campagne du Tonkin) was an armed conflict fought between June 1883 and April 1886 by the French against, variously, the Vietnamese, Liu Yongfu's Black Flag Army and the Chinese Guangxi and Yunnan armies to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a French protectorate there. The campaign, complicated in August 1884 by the outbreak of the Sino-French War and in July 1885 by the Can Vuong nationalist uprising in Annam, which required the diversion of large numbers of French troops, was conducted by the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, supported by the gunboats of the Tonkin Flotilla. The campaign officially ended in April 1886, when the expeditionary corps was reduced in size to a division of occupation, but Tonkin was not effectively pacified until 1896.

FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR: THE third SAXON CAVALRY REGIMENT AT THE FIGHT OF BUZANCY, AUGUST 27 1870

The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, led by Henry Morton Stanley, undertook to rescue Emin by going up the Congo River and then through the Ituri Forest, an extraordinarily difficult route that resulted in the loss of two-thirds of the expedition. Stanley met Emin in April 1888, and after a year spent in argument and indecision, during which Emin and Jephson were imprisoned at Dufile by troops who mutinied from August to November 1888, Emin was convinced to leave for the coast. They arrived in Bagamoyo in 1890. During celebrations Emin was injured when he stepped through a window he mistook for an opening to a balcony. Emin spent two months in a hospital recovering while Stanley left without being able to bring him back in triumph.

The discovery of gold in Colorado in 1858 resulted in a gold rush to the area.The year 1859 is memorable for the number of travelers to Pike's Peak. The illustration is no fancy sketch. It represents what many men saw on the Plains. It is claimed that one party crossed the Plains, carrying his outfit on a wheelbarrow; and others drew hand-carts. Many of the white-topped wagons bore amusing inscriptions, as follows: on a wagon drawn by two yoke of oxen, moving at a snail's pace, appeared in large letters 'Lightning Express.' In this illustration dating to 1909, migrants moving west in covered wagons, often called Prairie Schooners.

The First Anglo-Chinese War (1839-42), known popularly as the First Opium War or simply the Opium War, was fought between the United Kingdom and the Qing Dynasty of China over their conflicting viewpoints on diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of justice. Chinese officials wished to stop what was perceived as an outflow of silver and to control the spread of opium, and confiscated supplies of opium from British traders. The British government, although not officially denying China's right to control imports, objected to this seizure and used its newly developed military power to enforce violent redress. In 1842, the Treaty of Nankingthe first of what the Chinese later called the unequal treatiesgranted an indemnity to Britain, the opening of five treaty ports, and the cession of Hong Kong Island, thereby ending the trade monopoly of the Canton System.
