The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point. Union Maj. Gen. George Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lee's attempt to invade the North.

The Macedonian Phalanx - Battle of the Carts (335 B.C.). The first of the young Alexanders famous victories was against the wild mountain tribes of Thrace. From the summits of their rocky passes they rolled down carts full of heavy stones, hoping to crush the climbing Macedonians and break the ranks of the dreaded phalanx. Alexander met the novel attack by bidding his soldiers crouch in a compact mass beneath their shields, so that the plunging carts leaped fairly over them without injury. Then the unbroken phalanx met and defeated the lighter armed barbarians.

Roman tradition and legend said that the twin gods Castor and Polluxboth on horsebackfought alongside the Romans at the Battle of Lake Regillus and were key to the Romans defeating the Latin League. In the upper middle of the illustration, you can see the twins riding white horses andn their white capes flying behind them.The date was around 496 BC. Leading the Latins was a Tarquin, and it was the Tarquins last attempt to re-assume their power over Rome.
