Icing a Giant Cake. With the failure of thermite to produce any marked demolishing effect on this iceberg in Cape Bonavista Bay, Nfld., the Ice Patrol tries another experiment. Three U.S. Coast Guard officers begin spreading 100 lbs. of lamp black (carbon) over half the area of the 75-ft. width and 150-ft length of the tabular iceberg. The basic theory here is that the carbon with its potential powers of holding the heat from sun rays can hasten the melting of the berg. The iceberg boarders are (l to r) Ensign Robert W. Dudley, USCGR, of Liverpool, NY., Lieut Commander Robertson P. Dinsmore, ISCG, of Falmouth, Mass, who is Executive Officer of the International Ice Patrol, and Lieutenant (jg) Thomas F. Budinger, USCGR, of Springfield, Ill. A lifeboat from the Ice Patrol oceanographic vessel Evergreen stands by.

USCGC Androscoggin on Iceberg Watch. The length of an average city block, this iceberg (500 ft. long, 200 ft. above the water and possibly twice that below water level) watch by the Coast Guard Cutter Androscoggin off the southern tail of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, makes a picturesque frame for the ship's lifeboat crew but endangers a nearby shipping track. The cutter radios frequent warnings for benefit of ships passing in the area, and at night her lights act as a warning beacon. The cutter keeps International Ice Patrol Headquarters informed of its movements. Because of severe ice and fog conditions in the Grand Banks region during the 1959 ice season, two cutters were ordered out to patrol the most southerly drifting or more hazardous bergs in addition to regular serial ice observation flights by the Coast Guard Air Detachment out of Argentia. These were the Androscoggin, a 255 ft. cutter based at Miami, Fla., and the 213 ft. ocean tug Acushnet, based at Portland, Me. The sou
