Date: late 16th-early 17th century.The richly carved scene of a scholar gentleman riding in a moonlight landscape is also found in Chinese paintings dating to the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The scholar is riding on horseback while four young attendants carry his supplies and a fifth hastens to open the gate to the family compound. Date: 1820-38.In these cameos of devotees of Bacchus, Nicola Morelli, a shrewd judge of the coloristic capacities of hardstones, did not merely copy himself: In the gem on the left (40.20.44), with a goatskin and more complex tresses, he exploited four strata, the topmost being the pink of the grapes. In that on the right (40.20.45), in three layers, he investigated the uppermost layer of brown to define the grapevine against the pallid flesh of the girl, who seems even less in control of her senses. Glass Fragment 1200-1215 French The Cathedral of Saint-Étienne in Bourges still preserves a distinguished series of stained glass in its chapels. These fragments from some of the destroyed ambulatory windows exemplify the high quality of the original decoration. Note especially the blood red devil, probably from a Last Judgment scene, and the elegant figure of Christ from the Crucifixion.. Glass Fragment 467268

Bellows with the Flight into Egypt first half 16th century or later Netherlandish By the fifteenth century, bellows, an implement known from antiquity, were often richly decorated and were displayed on the chimneys of domestic interiors. This bellows, carved in high relief and once brightly painted, shows on one side the Flight into Egypt. Beneath the scene are two coats of arms, the left one unidentified, the right identified as that of Amsterdam, indicating that the bellows was once used in a household or a guild hall in that city. The back of the bellows has a circular inset within a deep gilded molding pierced with three openings for the intake of air. The air was expelled through the metal pipe projecting from the jaws of the dragons head at the end of the bellows. The sides of the bellows are of leather.The decoration on this bellows of a religious subject does not indicate that it belongs to a religious establishment; such themes frequently appear on objects of daily household

Cornish Celebration Presentation Plaque. Artist: Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, Dublin 1848-1907 Cornish, New Hampshire). Dimensions: 32 1/2 × 18 7/8 in. (82.6 × 48 cm). Date: 1905-6.In commemoration of Saint-Gaudens's twenty years in Cornish, New Hampshire, residents wrote, organized, and acted in the allegorical play "A Masque of 'Ours,' the Gods and the Golden Bowl." It was performed on June 22, 1905, on the grounds of the sculptor's house, Aspet, with the participants dressed as ancient mythological figures. Soon thereafter, Saint-Gaudens modeled a plaque to express his gratitude to the players and musicians. The text painstakingly records their names, while a classical temple framed by pine trees draped with stage curtains and masks recalls the setting. This large gilded version was a gift to the playwright, Louis Shipman, who wrote and directed the masque. . This lock plate was once the most decorative element on a travelling chest. On the hasp is the figure of a woman carrying a shell laden with fruits on her head. She symbolizes Abundance. Flanking the hasp are trophies of armour and two seated female figures. Some ten examples of such richly decorated lock plates are known, most bearing the escutcheonsof leading Italian families.
