Throughout his almost fifty-year career (1819-1856) David remained true to his conviction that sculptural monuments dedicated to the achievements of great men and women most permanently and vividly express the greatness of a people. He continuously sought commissions for monuments portraying historical and contemporary figures whom he admired in order to commit their contributions to posterity. His most famous public commission, the figurative pediment of the Pantheon in Paris (1830-1837), which commemorates great men and was dedicated by a grateful nation, exemplifies these life-long principles. Portrait medal of Jacopo Antonio Sorra (obverse); A Nude Male Figure Shooting Arrows (reverse) 1561 (possibly contemporary cast) Antonio Abondio Italian Antonio Abondio was an Italian medallist who achieved great success in the courts north of the Alps. Abondio appears to have left Italy first in 1565-6 for employment by the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II in Innsbruck and Ambras and by the Emperor Maximilian II. This is Abondios earliest dated medal, probably cast in Milan before he left Italy for the imperial court in Vienna.Nothing is known of the sitter, who may have been a member of the Sorra family of Modena and Bologna. The reverse depicts a nude man shooting arrows at a mark—an allusion to the aurea mediocritas (the middle way or golden mean) and the exercise of prudence. The inference is: Do not aim for perfection, which even the gods cannot achieve. The inscription, Non Semper, translates as "not always.". World's Columbian Exposition Commemorative Presentation Medal 1892-94, cast by 1896 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American Saint-Gaudens, who served as an advisor for the Chicago Worlds Columbian Exposition sculptural program, accepted the commission for the official award medal. He had completed his design for the medal by the time of the fairs closing in November 1893. His design for the obverse met ready acceptance. It shows Columbus making landfall in the Americas. At the lower right are three male figures, one bearing an unfurling banner, and above them are the symbolic Pillars of Hercules with the three Spanish caravels and the inscription plvs vltra. His concept for the reverse, however—a nude male youth representing the Spirit of America—was deemed improper by United States Senate Quadro-Centennial Committee.
