Piazza San Marco late 1760s Francesco Guardi Italian This view can be compared to Canalettos of the same location from forty years prior. Guardis technique is altogether looser and less adherent to the geometric ordering of the square, its pavement, and facades. Guardi employs a playful, illusionistic device by signing his name in the miniature canvas being carried by the man at lower right. It seems to depict something otherwise absent from the painting: gondolas and the choppy water of Venices famous canals.. Piazza San Marco 436597

The Tower of Babel. The Old Testament tells the story of the people of Babel who wanted to build a tower that would reach to heaven. God punished them for their pride: he confused their common language so they could no longer understand one another. This is one of the earliest painted depictions of this story; it also affords a fairly reliable glimpse of late medieval building practices.
