Campaign vest (jinbaori), 19th century, Unknown Japanese, 40 3/16 x 25 3/4 in. (102.08 x 65.41 cm), Wool, silk, metallic thread, Japan, 19th century, In earlier times, samurai wore jackets and trouser suits made from richly colored and patterned silk, beneath relatively little armor. But in the 16th century the style of armor changed to cover more of the body, and these elaborate undergarments were concealed. As a result, high-ranking lords began to wear surcoats over their armor. These garments were often made of luxurious, sometimes imported materials. Flamboyant designs and glaring color choices signaled the rank and identity of the wearer and created an imposing appearance on the battlefield.

Date: 1800-1810.Waistcoats of the 18th and 19th centuries served as a layer protection and ornamentation during a period in fashion when the coat was intended to be left open in the front. The color was often chosen to complement the suit and covered in imaginative embroideries, heavily woven patterns or shiny satins made to draw the eye. The style of the neck, the length and the hem treatment fluctuated as the tastes changed from over-sized coats of the early 18th century to narrow tightly fitted coats of the late 18th century and onward.This very elegant vest is indicative of the taste for very high stand collars alongside double-breasted waist-length styles which came into focus near the end of the 18th century. The use of satin is flashy next to the elaborately embroidered waistcoats of the previous century, and shows their fashionable continuation as a decorative element in the male wardrobe. Summer Kimono early 20th century Japan Echigo (present-day Niigata Prefecture) has long produced high quality ramie (choma) cloth, which was used by the Edo period (1615-1868) for the summer clothing of the upper classes. This early-twentieth-century summer kimono may have been made from Echigo chijimi, ramie crépe, characterized by a highly twisted weft. The overall dark blue geometric pattern was done in warp and weft kasuri (ikat). At one time this kimono had long hanging sleeves and was thus a furisode, a form of dress suitable for a young woman..
