Design by John Sigismund Tanner (British, 1705-1775). Gold; diameter: 3.2 cm (1 1/4 in.). This very rare piece is another example of the fine patterns being produced at this period. With the coming reform of the coinage, the five- and two-guinea pieces do not appear again for general circulation. John Sigismund Tanner came to England in 1728, was appointed chief engraver in 1741 and died in 1775. He was responsible for a large number of pattern coins and for most of the second "old head" type of currency coins issued during the reign of George II.Pier Barbo, Cardinal of San Marco, afterwards Paul II 1455 obverse. Dated: 1455. Dimensions: overall (diameter): 3.4 cm (1 5/16 in.). Medium: bronze. Museum: National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. Author: Roman 15th Century.Thaler of Empress Maria Theresa 1780 Günzburg Mint The legend in Latin on the obverse reads: MARIA THERESIA DEI GRATIA ROMANORVM IMPERATRIX HVNGARIAE BOHEMIAE REGINA (Maria Theresa, by the Grace of God, Empress of the Romans, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia). This coin continues to be struck by the Austrian Mint with the date set at 1780. It is one and one half inches in diameter, about a tenth of an inch thick, weighs just under one ounce, and contains approximately four-fifths of an ounce of fine silver. It has a fineness (or silver purity ratio) of 833:1000.The word "thaler" (from the German thal, or “valley”) became a generic name for a large silver coin weighing about an ounce. It evolved into a widely known currency standard, and after the sixteenth century the term was applied to basic European silver coinage. It was adapted later as the monetary unit (in silver) of the United States: the dollar. The front (obverse) of this gold coin portrays the head of Emperor Tiberius to the right, laureate. The back (reverse) possibly portrays Livia as Pax, enthroned on a chair with scepter in right hand, branch in left. The inscription on the front of this coin, TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVTVS (ìTiberius Caesar Augustus, son of divine Augustusî), was important to marking the transition of power in the early Roman Empire. The title helped Tiberius to advertise his inherited right to rule, as Augustusí heir and deified first Roman Emperor. The back design showing a female figure is frequently assumed to be Livia, Tiberiusís mother and Augustusís wife of fifty-three years. Livia is depicted as the Roman deity for peace, Pax. The inscription around her, ìPONTIF MAXIMî, refers to the title of Pontifex Maximus, a title held by each of the Roman Emperors and signified the religious authority held by the Roman Emperor..
