It was Englands first coin to be valued at one pound (20 shillings). The gold sovereign bore no denomination and was literally worth its weight as bullion. Succeeding Tudor monarchs issued sovereigns bearing their own likenesses, enhancing their majesty with precious coins that embodied the fiscal might of England. The portrait of Elizabeth I was the first on a sovereign to show the English monarch in bust length, a convention probably adapted from Jacopo da Trezzos medallic portrait in gold of Elizabeths predecessor, Mary Tudor. The minute details of Elizabeths elaborate brocade dress, jewels, and crown are hammer struck revealing the skill of the Royal Mint masters in London.. Crown gold sovereign of Elizabeth I. His daughter the empress Faustina the Younger, was paired with an image of Juno who, as the wife of Jupiter, symbolized marriage and family and acted as the divine protector of children. Rome encouraged large families to populate its provinces and fill the armyís ranks. Faustina was the wife of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and mother of his thirteen children.. Gold . The arranged marriage between Hadrian (76ñ138; reigned 117ñ138) and Sabina (83ñ136/37), who is portrayedon this gold coin, took place around 100, but ancient writers reported that it was not a loving relationship. They were childless, and although Hadrian granted Sabina many of the honors usually accorded to an empress, he did not mint coins with her portrait until much later in his reign, around 128.The front (obverse) of this coin portrays the bust of Sabina, draped, wearing a diadem; her hair is waved up in a crest. The back (reverse) depicts the goddess Juno standing to the left, veiled, with a patera in her right hand extended over a peacock, her left hand rests on a scepter.. Gold . Gold; diameter: 4.3 cm (1 11/16 in.). A point of interest of this very rare piece is the initial mark. The mark, in the shape of a crosslet, and visible at the start of the inscription, dates the die to 1560-61. However here it has been over stamped with another mark, an A, used in 1583-85. This indicates the reuse of the die of the first coinage during the third coinage period. The restoration of the coinage to its proper fineness was completed during this reign. In 1562 a proclamation had been issued reducing the value of all coinage by one third. It was restored to full value again in 1572, when a new coinage was ordered at the old values. There would still be economic troubles ahead, however.Maddalena of Mantua obverse. Dated: 1504. Dimensions: overall (diameter): 4.65 cm (1 13/16 in.) gross weight: 41.43 gr (0.091 lb.) axis: 5:00.
