Government Rice Mill. This is a Government Rice Mill at Bagan Serai, in the Krian area of Perak. Rice is milled in the main by Chinese rice mills and Government rice mills are run in order to help the padi growers who are almost exclusively Malays from being too dependent on the Chinese for their rice prices and thus for their economic self-sufficiency. The existence of Government Rice Mills also is a help in checking the very considerable black market activity in rice. It gives the Government a means of insuring that the right price is paid and again that the rice is sold to the consumer at the right price. July 13, 1951. (Photo by British Official Photograph)
