John Brown (May 9, 1800 - December 2, 1859) was an American abolitionist who believed in and advocated armed insurrection as the only way to overthrow the institution of slavery in the United States. He first gained attention when he led small groups of volunteers during the Bleeding Kansas crisis of 1856. He was dissatisfied with the pacifism of the organized abolitionist movement: "These men are all talk. What we need is action--action!" In May 1856, Brown and his supporters killed five supporters of slavery in the Potawatomie massacre, which responded to the sacking of Lawrence by pro-slavery forces. Brown then commanded anti-slavery forces at the Battle of Black Jack (June 2) and the Battle of Osawatomie (August 30, 1856).

The High Commission in session in Washington, was formed to resolve the deadlock in the 1876 presidential election. They settled on the Compromise of 1877, an informal, unwritten deal, that settled the intensely disputed 1876 US presidential election. As a result the Republican candidate, Rutherford Hayes, became President, and the Federal Government abandoned post war Reconstruction of the South withdrawing the Federal Troops who protected African Americans civil rights (BSLOC_2019_6_25)

1863 scene of New York City draft lottery, where randomly selected dates, if matching a draft eligible man's birthday, required him to serve in the Union Army. The draft drew from male citizens, and immigrants who had filed for citizenship, between ages 20 and 45 (BSLOC_2019_2_106)

Durand was commissioned by Trumbull to engrave the plate for $3000.
