Little Dorrit, Missing and Dreaming

Performance of the play 'Hamlet' by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Penultimate scene of Act 5. It takes place in a room of the castle where a sword contest between Hamlet and Laertes has just been played out, wager promoted by Claudius, the King of Denmark. After the third round, Laertes wounds Hamlet, being at the same time wounded with his own poisoned sword. Laertes is shown leaning on a group of servants. Queen Gertrude had toasted Hamlet, drinking from a cup presented to her by a page containing a poisoned pearl placed by Claudius, with the intention of presenting it to Hamlet to drink a toast if he were victorious. The 1906 caption reads: Segestes was a German chief whose daughter Thusnelda was wedded to Hermann, the national hero of early Germany. (Hermann was called Arminius by the Romans). Segestes allied himself with the Roman general, Germanicus, and made prisoners of both Thusnelda and Germanicus. Hermann escaped, but Thusnelda was handed over by her cruel father to the Romans and carried away forever from her country and her husband, and compelled to walk as a prisoner in the triumphal procession of Germanicus at Rome. This was around 14 AD

English novelist Charles Dickens (1837-1870) published his novel David Copperfield detailing his adventures in his journey from infancy to maturity. It was first published as aserialin 1849-50, and as a book in 1850. The illustrator was Hablot Browne. Browne's pseudonym was "Phiz"; Dickens' was "Boz." Note the name"Phiz" underneath this illustration of Browne that has caption "My magnificent order at the Public House."

This engraving on wood accompanied an 1881 book on British Painters. The one is titled "Choosing a Wedding Gown" and is credited to William Mulready (1786-1863), an Irish painter living in London. Mulready was known for his works that romanticized rural scenes. His paintings were popular in Victorian times.
