In 1887, Dr. Joseph Kinyoun set up his one-room Hygienic Laboratory in the Marine Hospital on Staten Island in New York to research cholera and other infectious diseases such as diphtheria, typhoid, smallpox, typhus, plague and tuberculosis. This was the beginning of the National Institutes of Health.

Guy's Hospital- Life in a London Hospital, England, 1941 When large numbers of patients are to be transferred from Guy's Hospital to base hospitals in the country, they are transported by Green Line coach ambulance. Here we see a female patient being loaded onto such a vehicle outside Guy's Hospital in London. The nursing sister has the patient's MPC 47 form, which contains her personal details and details of her treatment so far, and will provide the basis for any future treatment. The medical superintendent supervises the evacuation. In the background, rubble can be seen, highlighting the fact that Guy's Hospital had been affected by air raids.

The largest inspection center was on Ellis Island in New York Harbor. In this 1910 photo, physicians are looking at the eyes for signs of trachoma.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War Cholmondeley Castle, Cheshire, was used as a Royal Navy Auxiliary Hospital during the Second World War. Here a patient is having his eye examined in one of the smaller libraries, with books still in position on the shelves behind. Cholmondeley Castle was one of several naval hospitals especially set up to treat patients with severe or chronic psychiatric illness.
