Gas Drill at a London Hospital- Gas Masks For Babies Are Tested, 1940 Nurses at a London hospital unpack baby gas respirators ready for a drill. On the window sill, their own gas masks can be seen. On the right hand side of each mask, the bellows arrangement that would supply the child with air can be seen. This tube needed to be pumped so that the child could breathe.

Royal Naval Auxiliary Hospital, Cholmondeley Castle. 7-14 July 1942. Patients at the Occupational Therapy centre at the Royal Naval Auxiliary Hospital at Cholmondeley Castle, Cheshire. Cholmondeley Castle was one of several naval hospitals especially set up to treat patients with severe or chronic psychiatric illness.

Union army patients in a Harewood Hospital ward, have mosquito nets over beds in 1864. The hospital had 1,872 beds, and was only one of several military hospitals around Washington, DC during the US Civil War (BSLOC_2019_2_45)

Turkish Opium For Britain- the USE of Opium in British Medicine, UK, 1943 A worker at an opium processing laboratory, somewhere in Britain, weighs out 10 grams of morphine hydrochloride for packing. She is wearing a mask to prevent any inhalation of the powder as she works. The opium from which this morphine and its allied salts have been extracted was imported from Turkey by the Ministry of Health. According to the original caption: 'Extraction processes are secret. The final products are morphine; codeine with its salts, used for analgesic tablets; ethyl morphine and diamorphine, both products of morphine; papaverine, used for asthma and sore throats. Products are kept behind a locked door. A warning bell rings whenever the door is opened. Names of all workers are registered with the British Home Office'.

New War Opens on Factory Front- X-ray Screening For Tuberculosis, London, England, 1943 A factory worker hands his x-ray identification card to a clerk in the makeshift clinic being held in the factory shelter canteen, who fills in all necessary details, such as name, age, address, occupation and if there is any contact with TB at home. In case of recall, details of his shifts for the next 2 weeks are also recorded. The worker then moves on into the x-ray room.
