Evening cloak 1885-89 Emile Pingat French Emile Pingat had a proclivity for designing carefully finished dresses and outerwear which made him one of the top three French fashion designers during the second half of the 19th century. Active between 1860 and 1896, Pingat was adroit at manipulating multiple textiles and trimmings into a cohesive and elevated garment. He was inspired by design elements of other cultures and often reinterpreted them into his own work, making them unique and intriguing. His elaborately decorated and impeccably tailored outwear was particularly sought after.The influence Pingat drew from Chinese robes when styling this cloak is evident with the mandarin collar, wide cuffs and flat front. Dressing jacket ca. 1895 American The design of this dressing jacket has incorporated the slashing found in men's Renaissance doublets in the yoke bands. During the 1890s, historical influences were quite common and so it is appropriate that this jacket is an expression of that once fashionable garment. The color was often chosen to complement the suit and covered in imaginative embroideries, heavily woven patterns or shiny satins made to draw the eye. The style of the neck, the length and the hem treatment fluctuated as the tastes changed from over-sized coats of the early 18th century to narrow tightly fitted coats of the late 18th century and onward.This shimmering waistcoat would have been magnificent in its original condition and likely have been reserved for the most formal occasions, possibly a court appearance or an official high ceremony. The spindly flower embroidery on the pocket flaps and cuffs is particularly whimsical and has a biomorphic quality. Jacket 1840-80 Russian The dushegreya in Russian costume is also commonly known as a "body warmer". The style is seen both with and without sleeves. The cut is similar to the sarafan or the short epanechka bodice with the addition of padding and tubular pleats at the back. Sleeveless styles are cut straight across the body and hang from narrow straps. Dushegreya were worn over the sarafan for additional warmth when outdoors.This object was collected by Stewart Culin (1858-1929) during a collection expedition in 1923. Culin was the Brooklyn Museum's first Curator of Ethnology, serving from 1903 to 1929. Possessing an insatiable curiosity and appetite for collecting objects of all kinds, Culin conducted over twenty worldwide collecting expeditions between 1901 and 1928. Corset first quarter 18th century American Of the many underlayers that 18th century women wore, the corset provided the structure for the graceful posture and quality of deportment required for ladies of the time. Probably the oldest corset in the collection, this example illustrates the upright shape of the back necessary to give the 18th century woman the desired stance. The rigid V-shaped flat front formed a base for the decorative stomacher, another essential part of a lady's wardrobe. Corsets during this time were worn under the bust, pushing the breasts up in a seductive and feminine fashion.. Corset 157987

Caraco ca. 1785 Italian In the first half of the eighteenth century, ladies wore casaquins and petticoats for daywear as an alternative to the formal robe à la française. The casaquin, or jacket, was cut like a dress but came only to the hip. Usually the skirt was of a contrasting material or color and ended at the ankles. This popular costume was the basic ensemble for ladies of the bourgeoisie and for servants. This Italian casaquin, once in the Simonetti Collection, Rome, is an elaborate example of the style, which enjoyed great popularity in Italy and is often seen in contemporary paintings.
