This illustration shows Don Quixotes Adventures with Windmills. Don Quixote is a middle-aged gentleman from the region of La Mancha in central Spain, who is obsessed with the chivalrous ideals praised in books he has read. After a first failed adventure, he sets out on a second one with a somewhat befuddled laborer named Sancho Panza, whom he has persuaded to accompany him as his faithful squire. One of the most famous stories in the book is DonQuixote'sfight with thewindmills. He sees somewindmillsand thinks they are giants. When he rides to fight with them, he is knocked off his horse. Sancho tells him they are onlywindmills, but DonQuixotedoes not believe him. The novel was published in 1605 by Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes.

In Greek mythology, the Sirens were three sea nymphs, and their sweet song lured sailors to veer off course toward certain shipwreck on the rocky coast where they lived. The Sirens then kept as prisoners the shipwrecked sailors. When Ulysses (also known as Odysseus), in Homer's Odyssey, passed by the land, he had himself bound to the mast and the ears of his sailors blocked so that they could all pass by safely.
