Taking Deep Sea Temperatures with a Bathythermograph. Donald C. Bailey, Chief Aerographer's Mate, USCG, 32, native of Bellaire, Michigan, retrieves a bathythermograph instrument for recording deep sea temperatures during an oceanographic survey of the Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind. Chief Bailey was a working member of an oceanographic team during the Northwind's surveys of the Oyashio Current, East Siberian Sea, Northern Bering Sea and other areas during the summer 1962 Bering Sea Patrol. The date collected will provide important information on the development of marine life which is important to the Alaskan fisheries.

Branded Iceberg. This mammoth iceberg drifting off Newfoundland was branded by arrows tipped with tubes of brilliant colored dyes shot by an anchor-crew member on board the U.S. Coast Guard oceanographic vessel Evergreen. Branding icebergs was a new experiment in detection of iceberg drift and deterioration processes, conducted for the first time on the 1965 Ice Patrol. The method made it easier for Coast Guard oceanographers to keep track of icebergs, which change shape and direction according to variations in winds and currents. Dye colors were green, red, and four shades of blue. The reason for choosing the bow and arrow was because it was the simplest and most economical way of marking icebergs in this first experiment. Shattering against iceberg targets, the tubes of dyes left eight to ten-foot stains that lasted about three days.
