Hartnell Head Covering For Coronation -- Shown here is a sketch of one of the series of approved designs by Mr. Norman Hartnell, the Royal dressmaker, for bead coverings which can be worn ladies attending the Coronation in afternoon dress. Regulation in the London Gasette state: Ladies attending the coronation wearing afternoon dress must wear a head covering. This must not cover the face but should be in the form of a veil falling from the crown or the back of the head as far as the shoulders but not lower than the waistline. Any colour excepting black can be used and should be made in a suitably light material such as tulle, chiffon, organise or lace and may be attached by a comb, jewelled pins flowers or ribbon bows, but not with feathers. Ladies attending in evening dress may wear a tiara or a similar head covering to that laid down for ladies in afternoon dress. December 19, 1952. (Photo by Reuterphoto).

In the mid-to-late 19th century Siam, women wore their hair short and combed back. They wore mid-length trousers, or 'pha nung', which were supported by a belt or tied in a knot. Middle and upper-class women generally wore a cloth over their left shoulder to cover their breasts, leaving their right arm free. Before this time, the midriff and chest were usually left exposed with tattoos decorating the torso. However, when King Chulalongkorn (r. 1868 1910) returned from Europe, he decreed that all women must cover their chests.
