These long sleeves are gathered at intervals to make a series of puffs. Called Mameluke sleeves, they became fashionable around 1808. Originally Mamluks were the bodyguards of a sultan. After Napoleons campaign through Egypt and Palestine (1798-1801), Arabian influences became increasingly visible in fashion. The inset is made of needlepoint lace, which was produced in Carrickmacross, Ireland, from 1820.

Shirt 1880 American or European A man's shirt is inscribed for practical reasons. The shirtmaker's client was Samuel Griffin; the shirt was made in May 1880. Both are identified in script at the right side vent, just next to the hand. This writing (normally invisible as this lower portion would be tucked into trousers) constitutes a record-keeping of the wardrobe, assuring ownership, but also registering the shirt's duration. The "6" probably notes that it was Griffin's sixth shirt of May 1880, part of a large order. The thrifty, Thoreauvian accounting, even for a luxurious shirt, suggests the American asperity about clothing.. Shirt 84219

Chasuble Back mid-15th century Italian Six fragments of red silk cut voided velvet, skillfully joined to match the pattern and repeat, were used to make this chasuble (a liturgical garment used in the celebration of the Mass) back, which has been cut down to a nearly rectangular shape. The velvet is patterned in an allover vertical repeat of a symmetrically placed five-lobed shape filled with a stylized plant reminiscent of a pomegranate with five buds projecting into the lobes. Although they resemble embroidery, they are actually woven by a difficult technique of floating weft threads of glossed silk to form a dense, colorful pattern against a solid ground. In this case, grape vines and autumn grasses intertwine with a bamboo lattice pattern. The difficult and time-consuming nature of karaori weaving made these garments the rarest and most expensive of all.
