Vision of the True Cross Appearing to St. Helen 1790-1836 William Young Ottley British Saint Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine, is seated on a low cushioned stool and looking toward a cross enveloped in light. This compositional study illustrates the discovery of relics related to Christs Crucifixion. Ottley is remembered as a scholar and a connoisseur, but he was also an accomplished artist, living in Italy from 1791 to 1799 and carefully recording fresco cycles by Giotto and other masters. He certainly knew Renaissance renditions of the Legend of the True Cross; the present drawing is not a copy but an imaginative rethinking of the subject. In style and treatment of anatomy it recalls drawings at the British Museum, where Ottley served as keeper of prints and drawings, and the dynamic pose is indebted to representations of the ancestors of Christ on Michelangelos Sistine Chapel ceiling.. Design for a Candelabra. Artist: Anonymous, French, 18th century. Dimensions: Sheet: 19 in. × 12 1/4 in. (48.3 × 31.1 cm). Former Attribution: Formerly attributed to Edme Bouchardon (French, Chaumont 1698-1762 Paris). Date: ca. 1760-70.The idea of using the elements from nature to shape the design of an object is also reflected in this French design for a candelabrum. Its body is shaped like a plant with three stems, growing in different directions and forming the arms to support the candles. Three children or cherubs are playing at the foot of the stem. Designs like this one were often executed in gilt bronze combined with porcelain, making them into very colorful additions to the interior decor. In France the national porcelain manufacturer Sèvres brought many comparable pieces onto the market, but the type was very popular throughout Europe and very similar examples were also being produced in Germany (Meissen) and Great Britain (Chelsea Porcelain Factory).
