Above at left: a variation of 1938-88-1298 at right below. In front of the pedestal and of the mouldings of the base of the sarcophagus is the escutcheon with the crown. Beside are the draperies. The body of the sarcophagus is as in 1938-88-1295. Above is a pedestal with the standing figure as in 1938-88-1292, with weapons surrounding the base, left. Laterally below sit two female allegories. An architectural plan is overdrawn. Center: a crowned woman, carrying a mace and a shield with fleur-de-lis. 1, 2 sitting at the corner of the entablature of a sarcophagus. Above at right, in its lower left part not executed because of the figure in the center: the architectural setting is a variation of 1938-88-1298 right, below. The canopy hangs along the walls of the intercolumniation. In front of the upper part of the pedestal and of the foot of the tub-like sarcophagus are two putti supporting an escutcheon. A Sheet of Heads late 18th-mid-19th century Mauro Gandolfi Italian This polished sheet with ten clustered heads is a fine example of the artists so-called pictorial heads (teste pittoriche), a peculiar type of drawing that originated with the Bolognese artist Gaetano Gandolfi (1734-1802) and which his son Mauro continued with great commercial success. Included are heads of different types: old bearded men, portraits, women with complex hairdos, and youths with laurel crowns inspired by antiquity. With regularly spaced cross-hatching and a dense system of dots to create shadows and volumes, Gandolfis signature style of draftsmanship renders form as if in a print.. A Sheet of Heads. The panes were often circular and small. Such a highly finished drawing might have been shown to a patron before work began on the glass itself. The artist was a productive Antwerp Mannerist painter whose works lack signatures or other documentation. Historians assigned the name Master of 1518 based on the date inscribed on one of his altarpieces.
