Queen of Tethers, from The Cloisters Playing Cards ca. 1475-80 South Netherlandish The Cloisters set of fifty-two cards constitutes the only known complete deck of illuminated ordinary playing cards (as opposed to tarot cards) from the fifteenth century. There are four suits, each consisting of a king, queen, knave, and ten pip cards. The suit symbols, based on equipment associated with the hunt, are hunting horns, dog collars, hound tethers, and game nooses. The value of the pip cards is indicated by appropriate repetitions of the suit symbol. The figures, which appear to be based on Franco-Flemish models, were drawn in a bold, free, and engaging, if somewhat unrefined, hand. Their exaggerated and sometimes anachronistic costumes suggest a lampoon of extravagant Burgundian court fashions. Although some period card games are named, it is not known how they were played. Almost all card games did, however, involve some form of gambling. The condition of the set indicates that the cards w

Kalmuk Woman ca. 1780-1800 Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, St. Petersburg Russian About 1780 the Imperial factory began the production of a large series of figures depicting Russian national types, of which fourteen are represented in the Linsky Collection. Like most of the figures, this figure is modeled from engravings published by Johann Gottlieb Georghi in his Description if All the Peoples Inhabiting the Russian State (editions of 1774, 1776, and later). The authorship of the models themselves is not established, but some may be attributable to Jean-Dominique Rachette (1744-1809), chief modeler at the factory from 1779 to 1804.. Kalmuk Woman 207051

Son of the brutal King Herod who had murdered the innocents of Bethlehem, Herod Antipas also ruled Judaea as one of the tetrarchs, or four kings, appointed by the Romans. After marrying Herodias, the widow of his late brother, he earned the scorn of John the Baptist. The Baptists outspoken condemnation of the marriage prompted Herod to imprison him. Tissot depicts Herod in a colorful costume rich in its textiles and embroidered details, a distinct contrast to the simplicity of the Baptists camel-hair shirt and Jesus white cloak. Just as the Baptists ministry heralded Jesus own ministry, so his encounter with Herod likewise foreshadowed Jesus fate. European Art 1886-1894
