The Virgin and Saint Joseph with Saint Anthony of Padua Seated in the Heavens Interceding for the Souls in Purgatory, While an Angel Pours Fluid from a Vase onto the Crowd Below (recto and verso) 1690-1710 Italy. A prolific draftsman, Pietro Antonio deí Pietri also made engravings and etchings throughout his career, creating 20 known prints. This double-sided drawing was the preparatory design for his most successful of these.On this side, Pietri drew his composition solely in pen and ink, the media he used in his early conceptual sketches. In his fully finished drawing on the other side he used brown ink and wash and opaque watercolor to create picturesque effects to be captured by the craftsman who translated the drawing into an etching.. Study of Boy's Head; the Queen of Sheba Before Solomon. Artist: Attributed to Antonio Vassilacchi (called "Il Aliense") (Italian, Melos 1556-1629 Venice). Dimensions: 11 3/4 x 7 13/16 in. (29.8 x 19.8 cm). Date: 1580-94.The author of this well-preserved sheet has recently been identified as the Greek-born Italian painter Vassilacchi, whose nickname, Il Aliense, means "the alien" or "the foreigner." The studies on the lower half, depicting the Queen of Sheba listening to the wisdom of King Solomon, can be connected to the background scene in the artist's monumental Christ Disputing the Doctors (1593-94) in the church of San Pietro, in Perugia. The large naturalistic rendering of a boy's head looking down was probably the first motif to be drawn, softly modeled in black chalk with a few strokes of red on the lips. The juxtaposition of the two studies, which gives the sheet a somewhat unusual appearance, is no doubt the result of its having come from a sketchbook. Museum: Metropolitan Mus

Virgin and Child with Saint Elizabeth, the Infant Baptist, Saint Anthony of Padua, and a Female Martyr 1514-22 Jacopo da Pontormo (Jacopo Carucci) Italian Together with Rosso Fiorentino, Pontormo was a leading and revolutionary artist of Mannerism in Florence. This expressive, highly worked up drawing can be dated in the period between Pontormo's Madonna of San Ruffilo’ fresco at the Santissima Annunziata (1514), and the Adoration of the Magi’ panel in the Palazzo Pitti (1520-22), thus early in the master's career. Pontormo's drawings, mainly figure studies in red chalk or black chalk, are among the highest expressions in the tradition of Florentine design. His early drawing style, particularly his preference for red chalk, shows the influence of his master, Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530). The early fortune of this extraordinary drawing is recorded by a copy now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. 1991) made by the Late Renaissance painter and draftsman from Siena Francesco Vanni (1563
