AUGUST was by the English called 'Arn-monath,' or 'Barn-monath,' meaning harvest-month. The instruments which appear in the woodcut do not seem to differ much from those used at the present day. To the left appears a man sounding a horn, with a spear in his right hand. Whether he is superintending the labourers, or is one of a hunting party entering the field, it is hard to decide. The sheaves are being lifted by a fork into a cart, or wagon, of tolerably good construction.

In Greek mythology, Orpheus was a famed Thracian bard whose lyre music charmed even the wildest of animals (seen here) and even plants, trees, and rocks. The son of the Muse Calliope, he married the nymph Eurydice after taking part in the Argonaut expedition. According to Greek mythology, after a snake killed her, Orpheus went to Hades (the Underworld) to fetch her. Charmed by his music, the gods freed her, but on the condition that he not look at her until he reached the upper world. As he neared the upper world, he looked back and, as a result, she vanished from his grasp back to the Underworld.

When his mother died the same year, he was given to Pope Innocent III, who became his guardian. When Frederick came of age in 1208, he asserted his power over Sicily. Emperor Otto IV invaded Italy in 1209, hoping to conquer Sicily and bring Frederick to heel, but in 1211, Frederick was elected in absentia as King of Germany by various imperial princes fed up with Otto's rule. Frederick entered Germany with a small army and was formally crowned King of Germany in 1212. He became undisputed ruler in 1215 after Otto's abdication, and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1220. Frederick fought often with the papacy, and was excommunicated four times, even once being called an Antichrist. He became King of Jerusalem in 1225 through the Sixth Crusade, marrying Yolande of Jerusalem, heiress to the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Frederick spoke six languages and was an avid

When he became Count of Luxembourg and Arion in 1288, he sought the protection of King Philip the Fair of France, becoming a French vassal rather than remain under the weak rule of the Holy Roman Empire. Henry became involved in the political machinations after King Albert I's death in 1308, chosen as a compromise condidate by the electors who feared King Philip's, and consequently France's, attempts to get his brother elected as the next German King. He was crowned in 1309 after some skillful negotiation, and was crowned as Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Clement V in 1312, the title having been vacant since Emperor Frederick II's death in 1250. He renewed imperial interest in Italy, launching an Italian expedition in 1310 and being crowned King of Italy in 1311. It was while waging his campaign to unite Italy under the Holy Roman Empire and fighting against King Robert of Naples in 13
