This informal portrait of Muzaffar al-Din Shah (r. 1896-1907) has been attributed to Abdallah Qajar, who served as a court photographer to Nasir al-Din Shah. He later headed the photography department at the Dar al-funun, a European-inspired institution of higher learning where artists learned how to produce portraits in various media and traditions. Abdallah Qajar also owned a commercial studio next to the Dar al-funun, which suggests that there was a market for photography outside of the court. The artist’s repertoire consists mostly of landscapes and portraits of high-ranking officials and royal family members. Here, Muzaffar al-Din Shah’s informal attire is emphasized by a couple of unbuttoned buttons on his overcoat. Arts of the Islamic World 1875-1925

Ismail Enver Pasha (Ottoman Turkish: اسماعیل انور پاشا; Turkish: İsmail Enver Paşa; 22 November 1881 - 4 August 1922), commonly known as Enver Pasha, was an Ottoman military officer and a leader of the 1908 Young Turk Revolution. He was the main leader of the Ottoman Empire in both Balkan Wars and World War I. After the 1913 Ottoman coup d'état, Enver Pasha became the Minister of War of the Ottoman Empire, forming one-third of the triumvirate known as the 'Three Pashas' (along with Talaat Pasha and Djemal Pasha) that held de facto rule over the Empire from 1913 until the end of World War I in 1918. As war minister and de facto Commander-in-Chief, Enver Pasha was considered to be the most powerful figure of the government of the Ottoman Empire. He made the decision to enter the Empire into World War I, on the side of Germany. Along with Talaat and Djemal, he was one of the principal perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide.

Iran: Reza Shah Pahlavi (1878-1944), during his time as Minister of War, c. 1921-1923. He was born in the village of Alasht in 1878 and joined the Persian Cossack Brigade when he turned sixteen, rising to become a Brigadier General, the only Iranian commander in its history. Under British direction, Reza helped orchestrate a coup in 1921 that overthrew the previous government, naming himself Minister of War and Sardar Sepah (Commander-in-Chief of the Army). He became Prime Minister in 1923, and later was appointed as Shah and Iran's legal monarch in 1925, founding the Pahlavi Dynasty.

Palestine: Hussein al-Husayni (-1918), Palestinian mayor of Jerusalem (r.1909-1917) during the last years of Ottoman rule, c. 1910s. Hussein was born into the influential Jerusalemite Arab al-Husayni family, his father having previously served as mayor. Under his leadership, Jerusalem went through high development, with new roads paved, cleaner streets and the construction of a sewage network, partly financed by Jewish communites outside Palestine. He helped foster Muslim, Jewish and Christian cooperation. He died in January 1918, a couple of weeks after surrendering Jerusalem to the Allies.
