The Slavonic figures pictured here date to 1500. They represent, from left to right: a Russian merchant and two Russian grandees (noblemen). Slavs lived chiefly in eastern and southeastern Europe. The illustration dates to 1882.

A coloured copper engraving purporting to show the dress of the people of Tonkin in northern Vietnam, published in Moor's Voyages and Travels (London, 1778). The blonde hair is difficult to explain except as artistic licence on the part of the engraver in London, who had doubtless never been to Vietnam.

The figures here are Franks in A.D. 800. Franks were members of the Germanic nation or coalition that conquered Gaul (present-day France) in the 6th century. Represented here, from left to right are: three warriors, a man of rank, a warrior, a woman of rank, a priest, and Charles the Bald (Holy Roman Emperor 875-877 and king of West Francia 840-87). The figures here are Germans in the A.D. 1100s. They represent the Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa) (1190) and the consort of the prince Henry the Lion. The Illustration dates to 1882. .

The Assyrian Empire of West Asia began around Ashur on the upper Tigris River. It reached its height in the 600s B.C. The five figures to the left depict Assyrian warriors. The next figure portrays a king, followed by a king dressed for war, and the king's bodyguard.

Samurai is the term for the military nobility of pre-industrial Japan. By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai followed a set of rules that came to be known as Bushido. While they numbered less than ten percent of Japan's population, samurai teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in martial arts such as Kendo, meaning the way of the sword.
