The metal components are predominantly plain, allowing the highly burnished and translucent scarlet veneer of the stock to be the primary focus of viewer’s attention. The veneer, made from the shells of Asian tortoises, is a potent manifestation of the Baroque predilection for the unusual and eccentric, applied to the gunmaker’s art.Fewer than a dozen rifles decorated in this fashion are known. Steel .Wheel-Lock from a Hunting Rifle, c. 1720-40. Germany, Munich, 18th century. Steel, engraved; overall: 29.2 x 11.7 cm (11 1/2 x 4 5/8 in.). At the beginning of the 1500s a new type of ignition system was invented: the wheel-lock, the first self-igniting mechanism for guns. This type of ignition involved a piece of iron pyrites held in the jaws of a cock. When the trigger was pulled the pyrites pressed against the serrated edge of a prewound revolving wheel, creating a shower of sparks that ignited priming powder in a pan on top of the lock. This action sent a flash of flame through the vent hole to explode the main charge in the breech of the barrel. Originally part of a deluxe hunting rifle, the lock plate's entire surface is engraved in a chaotic scene. Colt's revolvers had a rotating cylinder that could be loaded with several rounds and fired quickly by cocking and releasing the hammer or, in later models, by simply pulling the trigger. Early Colt firearms used percussion ignition and had to be loaded with powder, bullets, and ignition caps in separate operations. After 1870, Colt models were produced for self-contained cartridges that are much like modern pistol ammunition.First manufactured by Colt's factory in Peterson, New Jersey (1836-42), from 1847, the revolvers were made at a much larger plant in Hartford, Connecticut. A special workshop at the Hartford factory employed highly skilled decorators and artisans, many of German origin. TheRock pistolAncient weapons. 18th century. In addition to its premium factory decorations, the gun is also distinguished by its unique combination of special-order features that is not to be found on another Winchester rifle of this type. Winchester made the rifle in 1913 to the specification of Bernard H. Matthies (1892-1974), the American industrialist, philanthropist, and outdoorsman perhaps best-known today for his sale of a large parcel of land for a fraction of its value to the town of Beacon Falls, Connecticut, for the creation of a public park, today named Matthies Park.
