Date: first quarter 18th century.Fans such as this are known as "Vernis Martin" because the Martin family developed a varnish for furnishing objects in the early 18th century and became known for that invention. Varnish was subsequently used on European-made fans to imitate Chinese lacquer. As there is no documentation that the Martin family ever made fans, the association with the family may be unfounded. The impeller has 24 contiguous legs that are kept together with a purple satin ribbon. The three small cartouches against the top edge and the large central cartouche contain Chinese figures at pavilions. The compartments are framed with a band in which springs or spiral shapes. The background of the impeller consists of a brown-black grain and with large red gold flowers. The difference with the front and back of the impeller is only a detail: a round or a square table.
