Date: ca. 1812.An attractive design employing a light colored cotton upper with a boldly contrasting leather tip detailed in white chain stitching highlights these demure slippers. This style remained fashionable for some time; although seen here with a rounded point toe and wedge heel, another example from the collection (2009.300.1473a, b) features the sharply pointed toe and tiny waisted heel of the previous two decades. The heel, nicely repeating the leather of the tip, shows the gradual transition to the completely flat styles which appeared by the end of the 1810s. XIX century (1880-00-00-1899-00-00);Court shoes. Culture: French. Date: 1780-1800.Early men's shoes in good condition are scarce, and this pair of court shoes presents several interesting features. The red heel was an aristocratic conceit stemming from the 17th century, and worn throughout the next century. By the end of the 18th century, ornate jeweled buckles were no longer fashionable for street wear, but were still worn at court. Shoes which laced closed with a tie thus replaced latchet shoes, in which a buckled strap provided the fastening. These shoes have been altered to make them suitable for court wear: they are constructed with a tie closure, but the retardataire strap has been added to accommodate the buckle. Date: 1805-15.Simple but elegant slippers typify the styles around 1810, as this pair in cream silk demonstrates. The extremely short vamp and rounded toe are particularly notable characteristics of this date. The heel was becoming vestigial in the first quarter of the century, and although low by modern standards, the variety seen here was one of the higher types produced at the time. With the simplicity of the design, one can especially appreciate the thoughtful use of three widths of matching ribbon - used as binding, edge ruffle, and bow - to trim the shoes. Culture: American. Date: ca. 1840.The style of the poke bonnet manifests the demure and modest style that followed the young Queen Victoria's accession to the throne in 1838. This severe all-black example was probably worn for mourning, a long-standing custom that the Queen elevated to a social institution, especially after the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert.
