Preliminary articles of peace. The representatives of Spain and Great Britain, meeting in Versailles (France) on 20 January 1783, signed the preliminary articles of the Treaty of Versailles. They agreed to end the war between Spain, France, England and the United States. The emperors of Russia and Austria acted as mediators because of the tense negotiations. The Treaty of Utrecht ratified the "Asiento de negros", by which the South Sea Company gained the right to send Negro slaves to the Spanish colonies in the Americas for a period of thirty years. Article XVIII. From 1 May 1713, the French company "Compagnie royale de Guinée", was no longer allowed to import any black slaves into the Indies.
