'Space Helmet' For Flight Into Ether - Jimmy Bowden, four, smiles from behind new "space helmet" designed for children to wear on flights into anesthesia as he is put to sleep for a tonsilectomy in the Bethesda, Md., Naval Medical Center. Lt. J.G. Morrow, who with Comdr. D.J. Giorgio, developed the transparent helmet, administered the anesthetic in the first test. Jimmy, son of a chief hospitalman, called it a "pretty sharp trick" after the operation. It's the Coast Guard's Alaska Patrol Now. In a temporary clinic set up in the schoolhouse of Gambell Village, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, a young Eskimo boy's fears are stilled by the firm grip of his anxious mother as U.S. Public Health Service Doctor John T. Dyer listens to sounds in the tiny chest with his stethoscope. This examination took place on the 1963 Bering Sea Patrol, the last of the many annual Patrols that Public Health Service doctors would be carried to remote Alaskan villages by U.S. Coast Guard cutters. On this health phase of the Patrol, the Coast Guard icebreaker NORTHWIND delivered medical and dental care to fifteen villages in the Aleutian Chain, Pribiloff Islands, Nunivak Island, and St. Lawrence Island. With the increased efficiency of air travel in Alaska, doctors from now on will travel by aircraft to the villages instead of by sea.

NORTHWIND Cruise. Say "AAAHH" - Skeptical but cooperative, two little Alaskans submit to a dental examination by Dr. William J. Braye, Ase't. Dental Surgeon, USPHS, when the Coast Guard Cutter NORTHWIND touches King Cove, Alaska on her four-month cruise of the Aleutian-Bering Sea Area. Examinations of children and adults were conducted ashore and on the NORTHWIND. Considerable dental work was performed and some surgery. One of the duties of the NORTHWIND on cruise is to render medical services in cooperation with the U.S. Public Health Service.
