Sunderland is using the convector-type fire in the main living room. These have been developed by the Coal Utilization Council. Not only do they heat the main room and the water in the tank (also fitted with an immersion heater), but by means of air dusts, hot air is circulated through vents into the bedrooms. London Borough Stages Mobile Anti-Diptheria Drive -- The doctor giving immunization in the van, whilst the nurse holds the baby. To ensure an all-embracing coverage in their diptheria immunization campaign, the Health Dept, of Lewisham Borough Council are sending on tour a mobile van with a crew of four- doctor, nurse, cleric and driver. In one four-week itinerary a figure of between 800/1000 immunizations is attained. Calling anywhere on request, the van covers 60 miles per day. This service is much appreciated by busy housewives. March 31, 1948.

A Hundred People Want to Adopt Her -- If her parents cannot be traced, this little girl will be adopted by one of a hundred couples who have asked for her. She is Vicky Duke, the baby who was found - when she yelled - in a parcel on a doorstep in Duke-street, Stockport (Cheshire), three weeks ago. She is now in Victoria Ward. (Victoria ward, Duke street, that's how she gets her name) of Stockport Infirmary. The nurses say she is one of the laveliest babies they have seen. Physical Medicine For Children -- Defeating Infantile Paralysis - Susan Smith, aged 2½, has almost entirely recovered from that dreaded diseases, anterior poliomyelitis, commonly known as infantile paralysis. She has been treated three times weekly since the age of sox months, and is now about to be discharged. All that remains is a very slight weakness of the left shoulder but that, too, is yielding to exercises. Physiotherapist Mrs. Burks, at the Physical Medicine Department of the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, has been conducting Susan's case to its happy ending. January 12, 1949. Queen Mary Visits London Hospital On 25th Anniversary Of Her Presidency Queen Mary stops admire the doll of nine year old Christine Briars of Hitchin Herts. Christine is deaf and dumb. H.M. Queen Mary visited the London a Hospital, White chapel on the occasion of her 25th anniversary of her appointment as President. Her presidency ended with the introduction of the National Health Act and, with the King, she is now one of the Hospital's patrons. In her two hour visit the Queen Mother went into four wards and saw 60 of the 600 patients. She also met more than 100 members of the staff was photographed with them in the hospital yard. On her arrival Queen Mary was greeted by the chairman of the board of old and last year half a million out patients were treated. The Hospital moved to its present site in Whitechapel Road in 1756. Now she can look at and think about each thing that interests her. She learns to grasp, pick up and bring nearby objects before her eyes and into her mouth. In her fourth month she has been vaccinated against smallpox. suffering no discomfort from this procedure. Her gain in weight is a steady average of 3 oz. a week (rather less than most babies) and she now weighs 12 lb. 7 oz. - Mary grips and gazes at her little toy duck her mind begins to wonder and ask questions. In all, there are 75 students in training at the hospital where an eighteen-months course has to be successfully completed before they can qualify as midwives.
