A small group led by members of the fernandino party (noble people nearby to the Prince of Asturias) is heaped front to the Royal Palace and assaulted Godoy's House, looting, burning and destroying all kinds of belongings. On the morning of 19 March, groups of people went to Godoy's house in Barquillo Street, in Madrid. They broke the glasses of the house and made a bonfire with the furniture. In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale "The Twelve Brothers," which told of a king who planned to kill his 12 sons when a daughter was born. The boys learned of this and fled to the woods Years later, the daughter learned as well and found them in the forest. Here the brothers are reunited with their sister for the first time. 'Mr. Underhill has selected a rustic subject, and called it by the quaint and not inappropriate title of "Simon and Iphigenia". The story is simple enough and unmistakable enough. The execution is careful, and the colour throughout rich and in good keeping. It is in every respect a bit of rustic life upon canvas that will find and retain admirers'. The page shown here displays two of three engravings produced for the article Corn-Husking in New England.” Drawn little more than a year after Homer started working for Harper’s Weekly, the works reveal that he had not yet come into his own stylistically. The images rely on standard depictions of the subject often found in the art of genre painters of the 1840s and 1850s, and indeed, they echo Homer’s own earlier version of the theme. They are not without charm, however, for they present the stereotyped idyllic vision of hard work and its rewards in rural America. American Art 1858
