"Zal Expounds the Mysteries of the Magi", Folio 87v from the Shahnama (Book of Kings) of Shah Tahmasp ca. 1525 Abu'l Qasim Firdausi The Shahnama made for the Safavid ruler Shah Tahmasp (r. 1524-76) is the most luxurious sixteenthcentury copy of this poem about the legendary kings of Iran. It took more than twenty years to complete and involved two generations of the best Safavid artists, including Qadimi, painter of the scene here, who worked on many projects for Shah Tahmasp. In this painting, the hero Zal seeks advice on his wish to marry Rudaba from the wise Magi, seated at the foot of his throne.. She has painted the walls with romantic scenes and dressed herself alluringly with the intention of seducing him. The artist has discreetly inserted his name and the paintings date in a brick of the house at the upper left. The virtuous Joseph, with flaming halo and eternally youthful features, rejects the married womans advances, but many years later, when Zulaykha is an elderly widow, they are reunited. "Yusuf and Zulaikha", Folio 51r from a Bustan of Sa`di ca. 1525-35 The Bustan of Sadi, completed in 1257, relates moral advice with illustrative anecdotes. The manuscript to which this painting belongs was likely copied in Herat, but it was illustrated for an Uzbek patron several years later, probably in Bukhara in the 1530s. The story of Yusuf and Zulaikha appears in the Quran, the Bible, and Jamis Haft Awrang, in addition to the Bustan of Sadi. According to the story, Yusufs arresting beauty captures the hearts of all of the women he encounters. Zulaikha, unable to quell her thoughts of Yusuf, attempts to seduce him, but he rejects her advances until they meet again and marry many years later. In some versions of the story, this uncontrollable passion is intended as a Sufi metaphor for a beloveds yearning for union with the divine; it illustrates the triumph of the spiritual over carnal love.. This painting is an illustration from the Persian translation of the great Hindu epic known as the Mahabharata (Razm-nama in Persian). The Mughal emperors who ruled northern India from the mid-sixteenth to the nineteenth century were Muslims, originally from Central Asia. One of the early emperors, Akbar, had the major texts of Hinduism translated into Persian so he could better understand their stories and teachings. The relatively simple composition and lack of minute detail suggest that this painting was made not for the emperor, but for one of his courtiers. It depicts an episode in which

"Marriage of Khusrau and Shirin", Folio 104 from a Khamsa (Quintet) of Nizami of Ganja dated A.H. 931/A.D. 1524-25 Nizami The second poem of Nizamis Khamsa (Quintet) is a romantic epic tale concerning the last great Sasanian ruler, Khusrau II, and his beloved Armenian princess, Shirin. While their union is delayed by many trials, tribulations, and intervening marriages, eventually the two are happily wed. This painting depicts their marriage, set within a crystalline architectural composition. Great care is lavished upon the details of the building, suggesting that the artist may have intended to depict a specific structure. Over the heads of the couple appears an invocation to God—"Oh! Opener of Doors!" The inscription on the portico above, dated Rajab 913 (April-May 1525), is contemporaneous with the colophon of the manuscript.. "Muhammad Revives the Sick Boy", Folio from a Falnama (Book of Omens) of Ja'far al-Sadiq 1550s This illustration belonged to a Falnama, or book of divination, which was used to predict the future and tell fortunes. Once believed to be a depiction of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, the subject matter has now been identified as an event from the life of the Prophet Muhammad, who is shown veiled (a pictorial convention not applied to Jesus in the Islamic tradition). The illustration narrates the story of an old woman named Umm Mabid, shown crouching in the foreground, who begs Muhammad to heal her son. Dârâb, the son of Bahman and grandson of Isfandiyâr, is seated in a domed hexagonal pavilion within a courtyard. His mother, Queen Humây, is positioned on a smaller throne to the left. The image was created between 1616 and 1620 in Istanbul. It is part of a Turkish manuscript with dimensions of 25.2 x 18.3 cm

Date: mid-17th century.Here the ruler is seen playing a rudra vina, accompanied by two musicians. This rare representation of ruler as performer appears in paintings from the Bundi and Kota courts. The work also references the fall harvest festivals, a time for relaxing and celebration. Babur receives booty and Humayuns salute after the victory over Sultan Ibrahim in 1526, from an Akbar-nama (Book of Akbar) of Abul Fazl (Indian, 1551-1602), c. 1596-1597 or 1604. India, Mughal court, made for Emperor Akbar. Opaque watercolor on paper, mounted on an album page with borders of gold-decorated cream paper; page: 42 x 27.6 cm (16 9/16 x 10 7/8 in.). The elegant figure of Babur wearing a pale yellow coat is shown seated on his newly won throne in Delhi just after the decisive battle against the Afghans in 1526. He looks directly at his son Humayun, who salutes him, having secured for the first Mughal emperor the allegiance and territories of a Hindu king to the south. Among the tribute presented to Babur on this occasion was the 793-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond, now recut and set in Queen Elizabeth IIs crown.

Khwaja Shamsu d-Din Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi, known by his pen name Hafez (1325/1326-1389/1390),was a Persian lyric poet. His collected works composed of series of Persian poetry (Divan) are to be found in the homes of most Persian speakers in Iran and Afghanistan, as well as elsewhere in the world, who learn his poems by heart and use them as proverbs and sayings to this day. His life and poems have been the subject of much analysis, commentary and interpretation, influencing post-fourteenth century Persian writing more than any other author. Themes of his ghazals are the beloved, faith, and exposing hypocrisy. His influence in the lives of Iranians can be found in 'Hafez readings', frequent use of his poems in Persian traditional music, visual art and Persian calligraphy. His tomb in Shiraz is visited often. Adaptations, imitations and translations of Hafez' poems exist in all major languages.

Umar Converts to Islam 19th century This illustrated folio is from a Shi'i epic recounting the life of 'Ali, the Prophet's son-in-law and, according to Shi'i belief, the legitimate successor to the Prophet. It depicts the Prophet, who wears a white face-veil at the center of the composition, conversing with Umar, whose right eye has been scratched out by a previous owner of the manuscript; Ali is seated in the foreground surrounded by members of the Quraysh tribe. The style and palette are consistent with paintings of the first half of the nineteenth century. Shi'i epics were modeled on the Shahnama, replacing the celebrated hero Rustam with 'Ali. Ragamala Paintings are a series of illustrative paintings from medieval India based on Ragamala or the 'Garland of Ragas', depicting various Indian musical nodes, Ragas. They stand as a classical example of the amalgamation of art, poetry and classical music in medieval India. Ragamala paintings were created in most schools of Indian painting, starting in the 16th and 17th centuries and are today named accordingly, as Pahari Ragamala, Rajasthan or Rajput Ragamala, Deccan Ragamala, and Mughal Ragamala.

"The Queen Ilar (Irakht) Before the King Warning him About the Brahmins ()", Folio from a Kalila wa Dimna second quarter 16th century This manuscript contains seventy-eight paintings and many text folios telling the famous tales of the jackals Kalila and Dimna. Based on the book of ancient Indian animal fables, the Panchatantra written by Vidyapati (Bidpai), the stories spread all over the Middle East where they became wildly popular. This manuscript has a strong flavor of Mamluk Egypt in the figure styles and bold drawings, with hints of Ottoman tulips and Safavid turbans. However, the burnt orange palette and darkly-inked lines have led to an attribution to Sultanate Gujarat where it is suggested this manuscript was copied from an Egyptian original. Its life in India is also attested by a Devanagari inscription at the end, although the rest of the Arabic text is written in a strong, left-leaning naskh-like script.. Akbar (Urdu: جلال الدین محمد اکبر , Hindi: लालुद्दीन मुहम्मद अकबर, Jalāl ud-Dīn Muhammad Akbar), also known as Shahanshah Akbar-e-Azam or Akbar the Great (25 October 1542 - 27 October 1605), was the third Mughal Emperor. He was of Timurid descent; the son of Emperor Humayun, and the grandson of Emperor Babur, the ruler who founded the Mughal dynasty in India. At the end of his reign in 1605 the Mughal empire covered most of the northern and central India. Akbar was thirteen years old when he ascended the Mughal throne in Delhi (February 1556), following the death of his father Humayun. During his reign, he eliminated military threats from the powerful Pashtun descendants of Sher Shah Suri, and at the Second Battle of Panipat he decisively defeated the newly self-declared Hindu king Hemu. It took him nearly two more decades to consolidate his power and bring all the parts of northern and central India into his direct realm. In 1543 Humayun was forced to flee India and leave his young son Akbar in the care of his family at Kandahar, but was reunited with him after two years in 1545, possibly the subject depicted here. This painting is one of eight folios from the so-called "Chester Beatty Akbarnama" in the Davis album. Written by the courtier Abu'l Fazl between 1589 and 1598, the Akbarnama chronicles the life of the emperor Akbar.. The fashion of having a tall baton top the cap around which the turban was wrapped-twelve times for the twelve imams-only appeared when that dynasty established the Shi'a sect of Islam as the state religion. The miniature is close in style to Herat painting of the latter part of the fifteenth century, although somewhat simplified in composition, architecture and landscape.. The Haft Paykar, or Seven Portraits, is the fourth of the five narrative poems of the Khamsa of Nizami, and tells the story of the legendary fifth-century Sasanian king Bahram Gur. In the fifteenth or sixteenth century, a new genre of painting developed that attempted to capture in imagery the moods of famous passages of classical music. The music, known as ragas or raginis, inspired artists to create little scenarios—happy or sad, fierce or quiet, taking place in the daytime or nighttime, the summer or winter—that were illustrated over and over again. Like many ragini paintings, Dhayashri shows a woman who misses her beloved. Here, the woman (with green skin) paints a picture of her absent lover, hoping that this will magically conjure him up. Her friend sits with her, apparently berating her for wasting her time. Peacocks often appear in images of lonely women because their cry sounds like that of a woman in pain. Asian Art ca. 1695

This manuscript is a copy of the sixteenth-century Hadiqat al-Sucada (Garden of the Blessed), written in Baghdad by the Ottoman mystic Muhammad bin Sulayman, known as Fuzuli (circa 1483-1556). It is a text on the Prophets family and belongs to a group of illustrated devotional manuscripts executed in a provincial style in Baghdad under the patronage of the Ottoman sultan Mehmet III (r. 1595-1603). Here, the Prophet is shown veiled and seated on a pulpit, accompanied by his cousin and son-in-law, cAli, and his grandchildren, Hasan and Husayn, all distinguished by haloes of fire.
