Bell's improved reaping machine by Crosskill, c1840. A farmer operates the machine by guiding two horses behind which push the harvester forward. Designed by the Scottish clergyman Patrick Bell (1799-1869) this was one of the first practical reaping machines to incorporate features that are still seen on modern combine harvesters. Engraving.

A cotton picker is either a machine that harvests cotton, or a person who picks ripe cotton fibre from the plants. The machine is also referred to as a cotton harvester.

The fourth Eddystone lighthouse built on the Stone 13 miles South-east of Polperro, Cornwall, England, which claimed up to 50 ships a year. Built by the English civil engineer John Smeaton (1724-1792) beginning in 1756 it was in operation for 127 years. Mine working in the South Staffordshire Coalfield, England. In this thick seam pillars of coal have been left to support the roof. A system of rails have been laid down and pit ponies are used to pull trolleys along them, taking corves of hewn coal to the mine shaft where they were raised to ground level.
