A Studio in the Villa Medici, Rome, Brush and watercolor with scraping for highlights on white wove paper, French artists who won the Prix de Rome were given studios in which to live and work during their time spent in Rome. The Academie de France occupied the Villa Medici on Monte Pincio from 1803. Three artists are seen in this room, which is sparsely furnished with simple wooden chairs, work tables and workstands. Folding beds, which would have been set up at night, were probably stored in the daytime behind the blue striped curtain in the right foreground. Paintings, plaster casts and portfolios are placed around the room. A pair of pistols mounted on a pedestal was carried for protection during sketching expeditions. Date: ca.1787.Trained as an architect, the French artist Desprez was appointed by King Gustav III of Sweden as the head stage designer for the Royal Opera in Stockholm in 1784. This drawing is not an explicit design for a stage set, but it is related to the sets he made for the Swedish opera Electra, which premiered at Drottingholm Castle on July 22, 1787. This scene of Agamemnon's interment pertains to the prologue of the opera, which opens with Electra and Orestes plotting to avenge their father's murder. The wand in St Peter's Basilica, 1823, by Antoine Jean-Baptiste Thomas (1791-1834), an illustration taken from a Rome et dans ses environs (Rome and the surrounding area).

This illustration that dates to around 1884 shows a sepulchral room at Caere (present-day Cerveteri), about 30 miles northwest of Rome. Caere was one of the most important and populous Etruscan city-states, in area 15 times larger than today's town, and onlyTarquiniawas equal in power at its height around 600 BC. Caere was also one of the cities of theEtruscan League. The area of Cerveteri is now best known for its Etruscannecropolisand archaeological treasures.

Capel Carrig, Caernarvonshire 1838 John Sell Cotman This etching of a Welsh chapel demonstrates Cotmans lifelong fascination with the irregularity of old buildings. Gothic arches screen a small side chapel near neatly arranged rows of heavy benches. Broken stone slabs in the left foreground disrupt the orderly interior. In 1824 Cotman had begun a series of etchings titled Liber Studiorum, which paid tribute to J.M.W. Turners famous series of 1807-9. Where Turner employed mezzotint engravers to add tone to his etched outlines, Cotmans choice of soft-ground etching enabled him to create his prints without assistance.. Vauxhall Garden 1809 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson In 1785 an established pleasure complex south of the Thames River in London was renovated and renamed Vauxhall Gardens. Tree-lined walks were adorned with statues and architectural elements and pavilions offered refreshment and entertainment. Most of the buildings were brilliantly lit and nightly attractions included concerts and fireworks. Here, a military band plays on the balcony of a decorated pavilion, as people dine below and couples dance outside-by the early nineteenth century it cost 3 shillings and six pence to enter Vauxhall for an evening during the season which lasted from May to August.
