The Letter Writer. A messenger waits patiently for the young woman to finish writing her letter. Judging from her clothing, she leads a life of luxury. To while away time, shenplays a lute. Given the amorous connotations associated with this instrument, her missive is surely addressed to a lover! Frans van Mieris was the most prominent Leidenfijnschilder (fine painter’): he could render velvet and silk, fur and wood in minute detail, in even the smallest format.

Pilate Washing His Hands probably 1660s Style of Rembrandt Dutch Critical opinions of this picture have varied considerably since about 1905, when Wilhelm von Bode described it as "a somewhat abnormal work" by Rembrandt. However, most scholars since the 1940s have dated the painting to the 1660s and assigned it to an anonymous pupil. The composition is reminiscent of mature works by Rembrandt but the Rembrandtesque surface effects fail to convey anything like the master's command of illumination and modelling. Date: ca. 1662.The essential subject of this serene picture is an ideal woman in an ideal home. Her head and elegant costume are covered by linen scarves, which with the silver-gilt basin and pitcher and the open window suggest ablutions at the beginning of the day. A string of pearls emerges from the jewelry box. Balanced shapes and colors (mainly the primaries) enhance the harmonious mood. Works by Vermeer were newly known and coveted by American collectors of the Gilded Age: this canvas was the first of thirteen to enter the United States between 1887 and 1919. Thomas Hees with his Nephews Jan and Andries Hees and a Servant by Michiel van Musscher (1645-1705) oil on canvas, 1687. Thomas Hees served as a diplomat in Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. Among other duties, he negotiated the purchase of the freedom of Dutch slaves and protested against the privateering of Dutch ships. Hees had himself portrayed in a relaxed pose, smoking and surrounded by the treasures he had acquired in North Africa. An inscription on the back of this painting gives his servants name and age: Thomas the negro, 17 years old.
