Letter to Suwa Daishin, Officer of the Shogun ca. 1339-51 Musō Soseki Japanese The letter, composed in formal Chinese, is brushed in a brusque but crisp, elegant, and legible style appropriate for correspondence between men of high social status. The Rinzai Zen monks handwritten seal (kaō) adds a touch of scribal flair to the perfunctory administrative message. Though it lacks any religious or literary content, the handwriting of an eminent Zen monk would have made the letter suitable for display in a tea ceremony alcove, and it was remounted in elegant silks. The textile motif of magpies and plum is auspicious since in Chinese the words sound like the phrase meaning “may you have happiness up to your eyebrows.”Musō Soseki, a high-ranking Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk, sent this letter, dated the eighteenth day of the third month (year unspecified), to Suwa Daishin, an official of the Ashikaga shogunate. Page from Illustrations and Explanations of the Three Jewels (Sanbō e-kotoba), one of the Tōdaiji Fragments” (Tōdaiji-gire) 1120 Calligraphy attributed to Minamoto no Toshiyori Illustrations and Explanations of the Three Jewels was originally compiled in 984 by the courtier-poet Minamoto no Tamenori as an introductory guide to Buddhism. The Three Jewels” of Buddhism comprise the Buddha, the Teachings, and the Clergy, and the book was correspondingly created in three volumes. It was commissioned for the imperial princess Sonshi Naishinnō, who had recently taken vows as a Buddhist nun. Since it was compiled specifically for a young woman, Tamenori wrote it in vernacular Japanese (using mostly kana, the Japanese syllabary) and had illustrations commissioned, which are now long lost. Inscribed on deluxe mica-printed decorated paper, the calligraphy shows how kana can be elegantly melded in flowing columns in the so-called wayō, or Japanese-style, calligraphy.. Manuscript Version of the Travel” Section of the Linked Verse (Renga) Collection Aged Leaves” (Wakuraba), compiled by S?gi (1421-1502) 1533 Calligraphy by Ry?k? This scroll of elegant but forceful calligraphy comprises the Travel” (Tabi) section of the Aged Leaves” (Wakuraba) poetry anthology, compiled by the great medieval poetry master S?gi (1421-1502). The type of verse transcribed here is a special kind of linked verse (renga), in which the first three lines of the verse is composed by one poet, and the final two lines by another poet. During an age when printing was still rare, students of poetry had to make their own transcriptions of anthologies for study. Little is known about the calligrapher here, who signed himself Ry?k?, except that he was a renga poet of the Warring States period, who was active in Yamashiro in Kyoto and also the Mizokui district of Settsu (Osaka). The dreamer records a meeting with two of his acquaintances, one of whom turned out to be a deity of the Kasuga Shrine in Nara. Two Poems from the Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern, Continued (Zoku Kokin wakashū) 13th century Traditionally attributed to Nun Abutsu Nun Abutsu (Abutsu-ni), one of the most celebrated woman writers of the age, earned literary fame for her moving account of palace and temple culture in her Diary of the Waning Moon (Izayoi nikki). Before taking Buddhist vows, she served as a lady-in-waiting in the palace and belonged to a circle of talented women writers. Letter in Kana Character early 13th century, probably 1220s Mye Kben Monk Mye came of age at the outset of the Kamakura period, a time when Japan’s political and religious structures were undergoing transformational change—when a court-centered government was shifting to a military one, and new sects of Buddhism led by charismatic leaders would emerge from the Pure Land Buddhism that flourished during the Heian period. Monk Mye emerged as one of these spiritual leaders and was a dedicated diarist and correspondent, and more than twenty letters in his hand survive, including the one here. Some, quite lengthy, provide revealing insights into his thoughts, relationships, and circumstances. Other brief notes, such as here are difficult to interpret without more context. Since this letter has not previously been published or scrutinized by Mye scholars, and is considered a new discovery, further research remains to be carried out on its contents. Four Poems from the Sekido Version of the Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern (Sekido-bon Kokin wakash) mid- to late 11th century Traditionally attributed to Fujiwara no Yukinari Four thirty-one-syllable Japanese court poems (waka), inscribed in an elegant, flowing kana (phonetic writing) script, allude to the sad story of the celestial lovers known as the Weaver Maid and the Herdboy (the stars Vega and Altair).
