Probing the Atmosphere. As the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind gathers oceanographic data in the Northern Bering Sea and Arctic Waters, the upper atmosphere also is being probed. Frank A. Purdue, Aerographers Mate Second Class, USCG, traces a weather balloon run on the ship's Radiosonde Receiver. The tracings give a graphic picture of the atmospheric temperature, pressure, and humidity, received from a Radiosonde Transmitter attached to the balloon.

S73-37030 (November 1973) --- The procedures for repairing the coolant system aboard the Airlock Module of the Skylab space station in Earth orbit are discussed by flight controllers in the Mission Operations Control Room in the Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center. Skylab 4 flight director Neil Hutchinson is on the right. Astronaut Russell L. Schweickart is wearing the sports shirt. Astronaut Bruce McCandless II, a Skylab 4 CAPCOM, is seated next to Schweickart. Items of equipment in the foreground are similar to components of a special coolant re-servicing kit which was taken to Earth orbit by the Skylab 4 crewmen. The kit consists of a tank containing 42 pounds of COOLANOL, a series of saddle valves, bolts and spacers, and leak-check hoses. The re-supply tank is a modified command module reaction control subsystem (RCS) fuel tank.

S73-27707 (9 June 1973) --- Astronaut Charles Conrad Jr., Skylab 2 commander, serves as test subject for the Lower Body Negative Pressure (MO92) Experiment, as seen in this reproduction taken from a color television transmission made by a TV camera aboard the Skylab 1/2 space station cluster in Earth orbit. Scientist-astronaut Joseph P. Kerwin, Skylab 2 science pilot, assists Conrad into the LBNP device. Kerwin served as monitor for the experiment. The purpose of the MO92 experiment is to provide information concerning the time course of cardiovascular adaptation during flight, and to provide inflight data for predicting the degree of orthostatic intolerance and impairment of physical capacity to be expected upon return to Earth environment. The data collected in support of MO92 blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, vectorcardiogram, LBNPD pressure, leg volume changes, and body weight.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Flight controllers gather inside Mercury Mission Control during the first orbit of John Glenn's Friendship 7 mission, which launched on Feb. 20, 1962. The Mercury Mission Control Center in Florida played a key role in the United States' early spaceflight program. Located at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the original part of the building was constructed between 1956 and 1958, with additions in 1959 and 1963. The facility officially was transferred to NASA on Dec. 26, 1963, and served as mission control during all the Project Mercury missions, as well as the first three flights of the Gemini Program, when it was renamed Mission Control Center. With its operational days behind, on June 1, 1967, the Mission Control Center became a stop on the public tour of NASA facilities until the mid-90s. In 1999, much of the equipment and furnishings from the Flight Control Area were moved to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex where they became part of the exhibit there

Women Adequately Filling Posts In NACA Laboratory: Nearly 200 women are employed at the Langley Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in a limited capacity as mechanicsÕ helpers and minor laboratory aids on the jobs formerly handled by men, according to E.H. Derring, of the Aerodynamics Division. Many phases of the operations of various wind tunnels at the laboratory are now handled by women with experienced male supervision. Mr. Derring said, pointing out that the reading of the data indicated on wind tunnel instruments during a test is done in a large measure by women. In addition to reading the instruments and computing and integrating engineering test data obtained from tunnel investigations, the minor laboratory aides assist in the preparation of aircraft models preliminary to testing. Women employees who will serve in the Aerodynamics Division of the Laboratory attend an orientation class for two weeks, during which they receive instruction on phases
