Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 30 January 1948) was the pre-eminent political and ideological leader of India during the Indian independence movement. He pioneered satyagraha. This is defined as resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience, a philosophy firmly founded upon ahimsa, or total non-violence. This concept helped India gain independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi is often referred to as Mahatma Gandhi or 'Great Soul', an honorific first applied to him by Rabindranath Tagore. In India he is also called Bapu (Gujarati: 'Father') and officially honored in India as the Father of the Nation. His birthday, 2 October, is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu Nationalist.

She served as Prime Minister of Ceylon and Sri Lanka three times, 1960-65, 1970-77 and 1994-2000. Junius Richard Jayewardene (September 17, 1906 - November 1, 1996), was the first executive President of Sri Lanka, serving from 1978 till 1989. Before taking over the newly created executive presidency, he served as the Prime minister of Sri Lanka between 1977 and 1978.

Daw Khin Myo Chit (1 May 1915 2 January 1999) was a Burmese author and journalist, whose career spanned over four decades. She began her career writing short stories in Burmese for Dagon Magazine in 1934. She worked on the editorial staff of 'The Burma Journal' during anti-colonial movements. After the war, Khin Myo Chit wrote for 'The Oway', a Burmese newspaper.
