Air and Space Surface Watch Over an Iceberg. Ships in the busy North Atlantic lanes will know exactly where this iceberg is and the direction of her drift thanks to the vigilance of the U.S. Coast Guard through air and surface craft reports which are broadcast twice daily during the annual International Ice Patrol. Here, a Coast Guard B-17, on a reconnaissance flight during a recent patrol, flies over the Coast Guard Cutter Tampa (17-PG-164). The Cutter is keeping watch over the iceberg as it drifts along, advising Ice Patrol Headquarters at Argentia, Newfoundland, of its progress. Experience has taught that there is no practical way man can destroy an iceberg, either with gunfire or explosives. The only sure way is to keep an eye on them until they melt away.

Looks are Deceiving. This iceberg may appear to be small, but nearly 85 percent of its bulk is hidden beneath the surface of the water. A further danger lies in the fact that jagged edges of ice protrude far out under water from the visible berg. The U.S Coast Guard vessel Acushnet (WAT-167) on International Ice Patrol, will keep track of this floating menace to shipping until the warm waters of the Gulf Stream melt it away. Forty years ago, the liner Titanic ripped her starboard flank on the protruding underwater edge of an iceberg, and 1,517 of her passengers lost their lives. The need for protection of trans-Atlantic shipping during the iceberg season, brought to worldwide attention by this tragic sinking, resulted in formation of the International Ice Observation and Ice Patrol services - another outstanding U.S. Coast Guard operation.
