Italian Sketchbook Sanford Robinson Gifford (American, 1823-1880). Italian Sketchbook, 1867-1868. Graphite on tan, medium-weight, slightly textured wove paper, 5 x 9 x 7/16 in. (12.7 x 22.9 x 1.1 cm). This sketchbook served as a travel diary for the Hudson River School landscape painter Sanford Robinson Gifford during his journeys in France, Switzerland, and Italy. In this two-page spread depicting the church of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Maggiore in Italy, Giffords precise and assured lines exemplify his skills as a draftsman. A practitioner of plein air sketching, the artist used these drawings as preparatory studies for paintings executed later in his studio. The small framed motifs that appear on this and other pages of the sketchbook show his initial experiments with composition. American Art 1867-1868

The Giudecca John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). The Giudecca, ca. 1904. Translucent watercolor and touches of opaque watercolor and graphite, with graphite underdrawing, 10 x 14in. (25.4 x 35.6cm). Instead of layering multiple colors as he often did in his watercolors, here Sargent laid in colors almost individually and side by side, creating an impressionistic appearance, especially in the water. This work was painted in mostly translucent washes and without the addition of any zinc white paint. Sargent used a tool, possibly the end of his brush, to scratch white lines on the hull of the sailing boat at left. Typically, the darker browns at center and in the portholes are enriched with medium (possibly gum arabic), giving them a glossy appearance. The stickiness of the extra binder is evident from the brush hairs trapped in the paint. American Art ca. 1904

Pitched It Sheer into the River . Where It Still Is Seen in the Summer. Artist: Frederic Remington (American, Canton, New York 1861-1909 Ridgefield, Connecticut). Dimensions: 20 x 28 1/4in. (50.8 x 71.8cm). Date: 1889.In 1888 Remington was commissioned to illustrate The Song of Hiawatha, the epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, for a deluxe edition published in 1891. By then a sophisticated practitioner of the grisaille technique, Remington executed twenty-two black-and-white oil paintings, one for each of the poem's cantos. This depiction accompanies canto 6, which describes Hiawatha's two closest friends: Chibiabos, the musician, and Kwasind, the strong man. The jagged boulder in the river alludes to one of Kwasind's feats of strength. Taunted with accusations of laziness, he threw a huge rock into the Pauwating River, where it remained visible above the waterline during the summer months. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

White Ships John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). White Ships, 1908. Translucent and touches of opaque watercolor and wax resist with graphite underdrawing, 13 7/8 x 19 3/8 in. (35.2 x 49.2 cm). In this work, one of the latest of the watercolors in the 1909 purchase, Sargent used a small amount of clear wax on the right side of the larger boat in order to repel the blue washes and create highlights. This is the only watercolor in the collection from the 1909 purchase in which wax resist is found. Sargents use of this technique later increased significantly; most of Bostons watercolors purchased in 1912 contain wax. American Art 1908
