British Canals in Wartime- Transport in Britain, 1944 A pair of canal boats travel down the Grand Union Canal with a cargo of coal, bound for London. The second of the two (the 'butty') is towed behind the leading, engine-driven boat and is being steered by Valerie Gribbis, the boatman's daughter. The name of this boat, registered at Brentford, is 'Uranus'. The original caption states that canal boats can carry a cargo of 50 tons.
