Cosimo de' Medici (1519-1574), Duke of Florence and Grand Duke of Tuscany ca. 1567-69 Grand-ducal workshops, Florence Lapis lazuli is a notoriously brittle medium for detailed carving, but the highly specialized Florentine grand-ducal workshops overcame many challenges as they fashioned and assembled hardstones. This portrait of Cosimo de Medici is more generalized than those on the medals it is based on, no doubt owing to the extra caution that had to be taken with the drilling. The cameo appears in Medici inventories, described as framed in ebony, between 1588 and 1628.. Cosimo de' Medici (1519-1574), Duke of Florence and Grand Duke of Tuscany 198274

Emmanuel-Augustin-Dieudonné-Marin-Joseph, comte de Las Cases 1830 Pierre Jean David d'Angers French Pierre-Jean David dAngers was the most prolific and one of the most important French sculptors of the first half of the nineteenth century. Throughout his almost fifty-year career (1819-1856) David remained true to his conviction that sculptural monuments dedicated to the achievements of great men and women most permanently and vividly express the greatness of a people. He continuously sought commissions for monuments portraying historical and contemporary figures whom he admired in order to commit their contributions to posterity. His most famous public commission, the figurative pediment of the Pantheon in Paris (1830-1837), which commemorates great men and was dedicated by a grateful nation, exemplifies these life-long principles. David dAngers extended his definition of public monuments to include portrait medallions. In the 1820s he dedicated himself to a personal campaign of crea

Cameo of a Gentleman ca. 1850 Erastus Dow Palmer American During the early years of his career, Palmer is estimated to have produced over a hundred miniature cameos. These small low-relief portraits were cut in shell and were often duplicated in plaster by means of a wax mold. Twelve plaster casts (1983.519.1-.12), all of men, are mounted in an oval in a shadow box. Only three of the sitters have been identified: Mason Fitch Cogwsell (1807-1865), an Albany physician; John J. Francis (ca. 1810-1877) of Utica; and John Nichols Wilder (1813-1858), one of the founders of the University of Rochester. Three are the same portrait, although the identity of the sitter is unknown. The sculptors signature appears on two of the unidentified portraits. Studied together, these cameos reveal Palmer's special talent for rendering a gallery of Americans with a surprising variety of expression and character considering their intimate format.. Portrait medal of an Unknown Lady (obverse); A Kneeling Man with a Basket of Fruit, Cupid, and the Caduceus of Mercury (reverse) first quarter 16th century Giovanni Maria Pomedelli Italian This portrait is typical of Pomedellis unassuming yet direct and sensitive manner. The inscription on the obverse, "F· B· ET· LONGIVS· VIVAT· SERVATA· FIDE" ("F. B. and may she live longer having kept her faith"), provides few clues as to the identity of the anonymous sitter. On the reverse is an impresa amorosa, a rebus composed of several elements referring to love. A kneeling man holds a basket filled with fruit. Before him is the caduceus of Mercury (the staff entwined with two snakes), while to the right Cupid stands on a globe inscribed A SO (Amor Superat Omnia, or "Love conquers all"). The scene may refer to Psalm 128:3: "A good wife is compared to a fruitful vine." It has been suggested that since the caduceus was a symbol of the Gonzaga of Mantua, the sitter portrayed on the obvese may have

Medal: Giovanni de'Medici delle Bande Nere model 1522 or ca. 1570 (cast 16th century) Francesco da Sangallo Italian On the obverse is a portrait of the condottiere Giovannide Medici delle Bande Nere (1498 - 1526), and on thereverse is his impresa of a winged thunderbolt. The medal may date to 1570 on the basis ofstriking similarities in style and composition with twoother Medici medals, representing Gian Giacomode Medici (inscribed 1555 for his year of death) andCosimo de Medici, the son of Giovanni de Medici delleBande Nere (inscribed 1570). All threemedals could have formed part of a propaganda series, planned by Cosimo in or about 1570 to honor his family. The significance of the inscribed date 1522 remainsunclear. The year does not seem to commemorate anyspecific moment in Giovannis career. Sangallos undatedmarble bust of Giovanni is in the Museo Nazionale delBargello, Florence.
